So, you went to the dealer for a "free" factory recall or a "quick lube" place with a coupon for an oil change, and what you actually get is a laundry list of repairs "needed" for your vehicle... Sound familiar?
My name is Brandon Young, owner and lead technician at Acute Auto Care in Lewisville, Texas. Over the past 30 years in the auto repair industry, I have seen almost all of the tricks that go on in our industry. Recently, we have noticed an upswing from reports from our customers. Most of these tricks can be avoided by an educated customer or getting a second opinion. Below are a few questions to ask before authorizing repairs or services to your vehicle.

1.   Do they use quality OEM parts? Some shops will charge you for quality OEM parts but actually use cheap aftermarket parts.

2.    Do they advertise heavily? Heavy advertising usually means they are having difficulty keeping repeat customers and are continuously looking for new business.

3.    Are they reputable? What do the customer reviews indicate about the business? Are they BBB accredited, Angie's List certified, or recommended by Repair Pal or Yelp? What is their Google rating? Currently, a quick Google search will turn up either negative and or positive information about a particular business that can influence your decision.

4.    Do they spend the extra time to explain your vehicle's problem and offer alternative solutions?  For instance, If your brake pads have 25% wear remaining, would they pressure the sale or recommend a re-inspection when the brakes are closer to the service limits?

5.    Do they offer extraordinarily cheap specials? Often times, these "specials" are just bait to get you into the shop to upsell you on repairs and services.

6.    What are the parts and labor warranty offered, and will they honor that warranty if a part or repair fails? Most auto repair businesses offer a warranty on parts and labor, and the warranty is usually in writing or posted in the waiting area.

7.   How long have they been in business?

8. Does the business employ ASE-certified technicians? Credentials and affiliations are indicators of professionalism and the management’s commitment to training and education.

9. Is the shop and customer waiting area clean and well organized? Cleanliness and organization are signs of a well-run business.

10. Are customers greeted and treated in a friendly and respectful manner? Many auto repair businesses excel in the area of customer service and satisfaction. A simple phone call to the shop to inquire about their services can give you a glimpse of how they treat customers.

11. Do they specialize in particular makes of vehicles?

12. Do they stray from the factory recommended maintenance schedule or recommend services not in your owner's manual?
